Pigments give colour and opacity to paints. Amongst the organic pigments, particularly important are azo-, phthalocyanine and anthraquinone derivatives. The most common inorganic pigment is white titanium dioxide (titanium(IV) oxide) which provides over 70% of total pigments used
Resin – the binder to hold the pigment particles together and provide adhesion to the surface painted. Waterborne paints most often use acrylic emulsion polymers as binders. The most common solvent-based resins are termed ‘alkyd resins’ that are normally used in enamel paints.
These are the primary constituents in oil, gasoline, diesel, and a variety of solvents and penetrating oils.
In paints, titanium dioxide (chem. TiO2) is mainly used as a white pigment. Nanoscale titanium dioxide functions as UV filter protecting the paints’ binder material. Equally, it degrades organic materials via generation of radicals (photocatalytic actovoty ), which is e.g. used for self-cleaning surfaces.
